Tips for Using the Crank Attachment for Drill

One of our customers wrote in with some tips on how he successfully used the Crank Attachment for Drill. This is helpful infomation, so we are sharing the information with you here.

"I got the Drill Crank Adapter and I just want to tell you that it works great and I am very happy with it. I am using it with a Dewalt DCD800 Cordless Drill, with a chuck setting of "5" for rolling the shutter down and a chuck setting of "10" for rolling the shutter up.

I stop just before the shutter is full opened or fully closed, and then, hand finish opening or closing. Not sure if it is necessary to do this, but I figure it is better safe than sorry." -- R.Z.

We thank our customer for his suggestion and below is a little additional information related to what he said.

When someone says "hand finish" a shutter after using a power drill, they usually mean:

1. Stop the drill just before the shutter reaches its fully open or fully closed position. This avoids over-tightening or slamming it into the stop.

2. Remove the drill from the crank or drive point.

3. Use the manual crank, handle, or operating mechanism to complete the last few turns by hand.

4. Feel for the resistance as the shutter reaches its end stop, and stop turning once it's fully seated. Don't force it beyond that point.

The reason for hand finishing is that a power drill can:

• Apply much more torque than needed.

• Make it difficult to feel when the shutter has reached its limit.

• Damage the gearbox, strip the mechanism, or stress the shutter if it continues to drive against the stop.

A good rule of thumb is to use the drill for about 90–95% of the travel, then use the manual crank for the last few turns in either direction. That gives you better control

and helps protect the mechanism.
